The newest Marvel Comics writer? WWE wrestler CM Punk
Marvel Comics wants to bring Thor, God of Thunder, to life in new ways in 2015. In February, it'll release "Thor Annual #1" and has turned to a series of first-time Marvel creators to write original Thor stories.
Phil Brooks, better known as retired WWE wrestler CM Punk, is the first guest creator in the series, and he sat down with the folks at Marvel.com for an in-depth Q&A about his comics cred and where he plans to take his Thor story. Brooks highlighted the fact that he's been reading comic books his whole life, and that his time as a wrestler "wearing tights in front of thousands of people and...play acting" helped him understand what it's like to play someone else, which should let him put himself in Thor's shoes.
What will his story be about, you ask? Brooks has been working on that with his friend and current Thor writer Jason Aaren, who told the wrestler he needed a story about a young Thor. So, Brooks imagined Thor as a teenager trying to defiantly prove to his father that he is worthy of carrying Thor's hammer.
"So the idea was, let's do a story about young Thor as kind of a brash, bratty teenager who's like, 'I'm totally worthy of this hammer. My dad's full of [expletive]. I don't know why I'm not worthy of the hammer. Look at all this cool stuff I did,'" Brooks said in the Marvel.com interview. "And it's more or less like a drinking story. He's gonna be sitting around with a few choice characters from the Marvel Universe, and they're all gonna be drinking, and Thor's gonna basically be complaining about essentially why his dad won't give him the keys to the car."
Given Thor's confident/cocky attitude as an adult in the Thor movies recently, I think it's safe to say Thor was almost definitely a brash, bratty teenager, so Brooks really nailed it with his idea. It sounds like it'll be a fun story to read, and one that almost all teenagers (and their parents) can relate to. Brooks' finished story will run in "Thor Annual #1," which will be released in February 2015.
